Casa Vicens tickets in Barcelona: visiting Gaudí's first house

Long before the Sagrada Família or Park Güell, a Gaudí barely into his thirties signed his first major residential commission: Casa Vicens, in the Gràcia neighbourhood. Built between 1883 and 1885 as a summer residence, it remained in private hands for more than a century and did not open as a house museum until November 2017. Here we explain what you see, what the ticket includes, the indicative official price, opening hours and how to make the most of your visit in 2027.

Updated 13 October 2026

History of Casa Vicens, Gaudí's debut

The commission came from Manuel Vicens i Montaner, who wanted a summer house in what was then the town of Gràcia, still separate from Barcelona. Gaudí, newly qualified, designed a compact, colourful building in which many of his lifelong obsessions already appear: nature as a source of ornament, craftsmanship woven into the architecture and a mix of humble materials with exuberant decoration.

Casa Vicens and its orientalist style

The house belongs to the architect's orientalist period. The walls alternate rubble masonry with bands of tiles decorated with yellow marigolds (Tagetes erecta), a plant that grew on the plot itself. The wrought-iron railing reproduces dwarf fan palm leaves, another species found on the site. This idea of turning what was already there into decoration is one of the threads running through the visit.

The 1925 extension of Casa Vicens

In 1925 the house was extended. Gaudí declined to take on the job and recommended Joan Baptista Serra de Martínez, who added a new wing in keeping with the original language, though with subtle differences in the placement of the ceramics that a sharp eye can spot.

From private home to house museum: Casa Vicens today

The house was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1969 and a cultural asset of national interest in 1993. In 2005 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage listing that brings together Gaudí's works. In 2014 it was acquired by the Andorran bank MoraBanc, which commissioned the architects José Antonio Martínez Lapeña and Elías Torres to restore it. After two years of work, it opened to the public on 16 November 2017.

What you see with a Casa Vicens ticket

As a house of domestic size, the visit feels very different from Gaudí's large buildings: everything here is on a human scale and the details can be seen up close.

The rooms of Casa Vicens

On the main floors you walk through the rooms of the original home, lovingly restored: ceilings with plant motifs, wall paintings, woodwork and ceramics that echo the garden. The smoking room, with its clear oriental inspiration, is one of the spaces that most catches the eye.

The Casa Vicens rooftop and garden

The ticket includes access to the garden and the rooftop. From above you can see the ceramic finials and turrets up close, as well as a view over the rooftops of Gràcia. The garden, much smaller than the original, helps you understand the relationship between the house and its green setting.

Exhibitions at Casa Vicens

Part of the building houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the house and Gaudí's early period, as well as temporary shows. It is the ideal place to connect this early work with what the architect would go on to build.

  • Guided tour: recommended if you are interested in architecture and want to dwell on the symbolism of the decoration.

Casa Vicens opening hours and when to go

The house opens every day of the week from 10:00. Closing time and last entry vary with the time of year, so check the exact hours for the day when you book. Some sources indicate that last entry is one hour before closing, so do not leave it until late in the afternoon.

The best time for Casa Vicens

  • First thing in the day, the morning light brings out the colours of the exterior ceramics.
  • As it is a small space, any time on a weekday is quieter than at weekends.
  • In spring the garden looks its best and the rooftop is pleasant without the summer heat.

How to get to Casa Vicens in Gràcia

Visit length and tips for Casa Vicens

The self-guided visit lasts between sixty and ninety minutes, depending on your pace. Guided tours have a fixed length. It is a perfect half-day visit when combined with a stroll around the neighbourhood.

Suggested route at Casa Vicens

  2. Go into the main rooms and look up at the ceilings.
  3. Climb to the rooftop to see the ceramic finials up close.
  4. Finish in the exhibition, which explains the work in context.

Accessibility at Casa Vicens

The building has a lift and an adapted ground floor, although some areas on the upper floors may be difficult for people with reduced mobility. If this applies to you, ask when booking.

Casa Vicens with children

Children's entry is free, and because of its scale the house is less tiring than a large monument. Asking them to spot the yellow flowers and palm leaves in the decoration is an easy way to keep their attention.

  • Travel light: the interior spaces are small.
  • Have your ticket on your phone and arrive a few minutes early.
  • Be wary of paying private individuals by bank transfer; book through channels that send a confirmation.

Things to do near Casa Vicens

Gràcia was an independent municipality until the end of the 19th century and keeps a village feel within the city, with lively squares, local shops and relaxed nightlife.

Squares and market around Casa Vicens

From Casa Vicens to Park Güell

Park Güell lies in the same northern half of the city, an uphill walk or a short ride away. Visiting both on the same day lets you compare the house of Gaudí's youth with one of his mature works. If you have time, complete the Gaudí route with Casa Milà and Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia, or with the Sagrada Família.

Casa Vicens in 2027: neighbourhood festivities and seasons

Gràcia celebrates its big week in mid-August with the Festa Major, when residents decorate entire streets with elaborate installations. It is a very lively time to wander the neighbourhood, although you should expect more people in the area and book your visit in advance.

Casa Vicens in high season

Spring, Easter and the summer months bring the most visitors to Barcelona. Even so, the house is usually less crowded than Gaudí's major monuments, which makes it a good alternative on the busiest days.
